„Eos“ hieß die Windhündin, die zu Prinz Alberts ständiger Begleiterin und ein beliebtes Motiv von Zeichnungen und Gemälden wurde. Die enge Bindung an diese canide „Göttin der Morgenröte“ verweist nicht nur auf die Bildgeschichte der Tiere und ihrer Repräsentation, sondern auf das vielgestalte Verhältnis des Menschen zu seinen Mitgeschöpfen: Das Seminar widmet sich Tierbildern von der frühen Neuzeit bis in die Gegenwart des Anthropozäns und untersucht, wie die Künste das Verhältnis von Tier und Mensch form(t)en. Wie sich Funktion und Bildsymbolik der Tierstillleben ändert, wie die Grenze zwischen Kunst und Zoologie fruchtbringend überschritten und Tiere mit der Entdeckung fremder Kontinente ihren Weg mitunter lebendig, meist aber als Artefakte nach Europa fanden, soll sich ebenso zeigen, wie im Zeichen der agency dem Tier des 21. Jahrhunderts eine neue Wirkmacht zuwächst. Fragen die Cultural Animal Studies nach dem Subjektstatus des Tieres bildwissenschaftlich zu beantworten, heißt gerade, dem künstlerischen Blick auf die wiederkehrenden Motive der Tiere in der Kunst zu folgen.

"Eos" was the name of the greyhound that became Prince Albert's constant companion and a popular motif in drawings and paintings. The close connection to this canid "goddess of the dawn" refers not only to the pictorial history of animals and their representation, but also to the multifaceted relationship of humans to their fellow creatures: The seminar is dedicated to animal images from the early modern period to the present of the Anthropocene and examines how the arts form(ed) the relationship between animals and humans. How the function and pictorial symbolism of animal still lifes changed, how the border between art and zoology was fruitfully crossed and how animals found their way to Europe with the discovery of foreign continents, sometimes alive, but mostly as artefacts, will be shown, as well as how the animal of the 21st century is gaining a new power in the sign of agency. Answering questions about the subject status of the animal from the perspective of cultural animal studies means following the artistic view of the recurring motifs of animals in art.

Im Rahmen des Praxisseminars werden wir zunächst – in einer breit angelegten Lektüre relevanter Forschungsliteratur – Positionen rezenter critical animal studies (Animal Studies, Anthro(po)zoologie, Zooanthropologie, Animals and Society Studies) erarbeiten und im zweiten Teil eine Sammlung ‚künstlerischer‘ Tierdarstellungen anlegen, die durch eigene Texte flankiert werden. Im Zeichen  verstehender Textrezeption und eigener Schreibpraxis wird so ein Bestiarium Moderna entstehen.

In a broad reading of relevant research literature and within the framework of the practical seminar, we will first develop positions of recent critical animal studies (animal studies, anthro(po)zoology, zooanthropology, animals and society studies). In the second part we create a collection of 'artistic' animal representations, which will be flanked by our own texts.

Markgräfin Sibylla Augusta von Baden-Baden (1675–1733) ließ sich mit Schloss Favorite bei Rastatt ein bemerkenswertes Kleinod errichten, das wir im Dialog mit Spezialist:innen analysieren werden. Als Teil eines barocken Gesamtkunstwerks, das neben der Gartengestaltung auch eine Eremitage und eine Magdalenenkapelle umfasste, entfaltet diese Maison de Plaisance eine gesteigerte Architektur und Raumgestaltung, deren Entwurfslogik es im Zeichen des material turn zu entschlüsseln gilt. Mit Blick auf Raum- und Medientheorien widmen wir uns zudem Maskenbällen und Kostümbildern, Spiegelkabinetten und der reichen, Europa und Asien verbindenden Ausstattung. Und vor allem möchten wir in einem Doppelpass von Kunstgeschichte und Kulturmanagement Veranstaltungskonzepte und konkrete Projekte mit ihnen entwickeln, um dieses Ensemble von europäischem Rang neu zu beleben.

Margravine Sibylla Augusta of Baden-Baden (1675-1733) had a remarkable gem built for herself in Favorite Palace near Rastatt, which we will analyze in dialogue with specialists f. As part of a baroque Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art), which in addition to the garden design also includes a hermitage and a Magdalenenkapelle (Magdalen Chapel), this Maison de Plaisance unfolds a heightened architecture and spatial design, the design logic of which is to be deciphered in the sign of the material turn. With a view to theories of space and media, we also devote ourselves to masked balls and costume pictures, mirrored cabinets, and the rich furnishings that connect Europe and Asia. And above all, in a double pass between art history and cultural management, we would like to develop event concepts and projects with them in order to revitalize this ensemble of European standing.
