Halyna Kohut is an associate professor in the Faculty of Culture and Arts at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Ukraine, where she teaches history of art, contemporary art, feminist art, and history of theatrical costume. Educated as an artist, she received her Ph.D. from the Lviv National Academy of Arts. Kohut is the CAA-Getty international program alumna and a recipient of scholarships and grants from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, Austrian Agency for International Mobility and Cooperation, the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta, and the Queen Jadwiga Foundation at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow. Kohut specializes in eighteenth-century East European carpets and kilims. She studies them as an intermediate zone between Oriental and Western design traditions formed on the so-called Great cultural frontier between the Christian West and Islamic East. She is interested in the migration of ornamental patterns as well as articulation of textile’s social and political meanings in the historical context. Kohut also studies woman art in Soviet Ukraine, focusing in particular on how ideology informed the identities of women artists and how they challenged that ideology with their art practices.

Im Rahmen der Philipp Schwartz-Initiative fördert die Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung Frau Prof. Dr. Halyna Kohuts Forschung zum Thema „Frühneuzeitlicher Diskurs über Natur und Textilien im Kosaken-Hetmanat des 18. Jahrhunderts“ an der Professur Jehle (Mai 2024 bis April 2026). Ihr Projekt untersucht Darstellungen der Natur in Textilien des Hetmanats durch eine dezidiert ökokritisch-theoretische Perspektive, um die vielschichtige Rolle dieser Darstellungen, deren Materialität und Medialität bei der Kosaken-Elite zu erläutern. Frau Kohuts Projekt ist in die von Prof. Dr. Oliver Jehle geleitete Arbeitsgruppe „Visuelle Kulturen der Frühen Neuzeit“ eingegliedert. Mentoren des Projekts am IKB sind Prof. Dr. Oliver Jehle und PD Dr. Dr. Jesús Muñoz Morcillo.

Frau Prof. Dr. Halyna Kohut ist promovierte Kunsthistorikerin (2003 PhD in Art History, Lviv National Academy of Arts). Sie studierte Bildende Künste mit Schwerpunkt Webekunst und Kunstgeschichte (Master 1999) an der National Academy of Arts in Lemberg (Lviv). Seit 2003 bis zur russischen Invasion der Ukraine im Februar 2022 war sie Associate Professor am Department of Theater Studies and Acting Mastery, Faculty of Culture and Arts, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. Ihre Forschung wurde durch zahlreiche Fellowships und Stipendien renommierter Einrichtungen unterstützt (z.B. College Art Association-Getty Programm 2009 und 2019, Kowalski Grant in Ukranian Studies 2002, Samuel H. Kress Foundation CAA Conference Travel Fellowships for International Scholars 2020 etc.)

Durch ihre Publikationen hat sie sich als ausgewiesene Expertin in der Auseinandersetzung mit Kulturartefakten und Netzwerken der frühukrainischen und Kosakenkultur ausgewiesen. Ihre Forschung fokussiert auch auf die Dekonstruktion des russischen Imperialismus und die Rolle ukrainischer Künstlerinnen im 20. Jahrhundert. Somit greift Frau Kohut hochaktuelle Themen auf, die an unsere Zeit anknüpfen, und behandelt diese materialnah, kulturkritisch und kontextualisierend.
